Using art in the environment

divider line

With a little thought and effort, the home environment of a person living with dementia can provide stimulation, comfort, pleasure and enjoyment. Natural and artificial light, colour, fabrics and textures, pictures and photographs, plants, views outside, all can be considered with the specific needs of the person in mind.

Creative Environments
Claire Craig, 2002
To follow on from her Celebrating the Person book on art activities and the associated pack, Claire Craig has written a volume which explores ways in which we can enhance the places where people with dementia live, not just aesthetically but in terms of reflecting the person, their life and interests. Too many hospital wards and rooms in residential and nursing homes are impersonal, and this book entitled Creative Environments shows how with a little effort and imagination, on a minimal budget, spaces can be made meaningful and pleasurable. The book itself is a pleasure to handle and every page has full-colour illustrations. Claire is an experienced occupational therapist who has put into practice all the ideas explored. She has a friendly, enthusiastic style which inspires the reader to try things out.
