Adults with Learning disabilities

As an organization we have often been approached by parents of adults with learning disabilities, or by those working in this field, to tell us that our books may be of interest to them. This year we attended the Learning Disability Conference in Manchester and were pleased by the response of a number of adults with learning disabilities that were there, and who seemed to really enjoy the books.

Below is feedback we have received from two organisations.

Both Andrea Wilson at The Progress Housing Group in Lancashire, who operate supported housing for people with learning disabilities and mental health needs, and Dominique Pennington at the Gables Residential Care Home in Lincolnshire for people with learning disabilities, have reported on their experiences using the books in these settings.

They have found that younger and older people with learning disabilities have really enjoyed using the books both individually and in groups. They appreciate the bold, clear images and the large print text, and enjoy using books that are age appropriate. The men particularly like the book ‘A Sporting Life’ while the other books are popular with both sexes depending on the individual interests of the person.  They found that they enjoyed the books and they prompted lots of interaction based on enjoyment of the images and text.  They worked well as a recreational activity and encouraged lots of discussion.
