When disabilities such as Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or confusion prevent people from enjoying traditional books and magazines, it is often hard to find suitable high quality books that can help to take their place.

Although experts in dementia believe that activities such as sitting and looking at art are much more stimulating than most people assume, and such activities may have positive effects on damaged brains, there are very limited suitable resources available.

A recent Alzheimer’s Society survey of dementia care showed:

54% of relatives responding said that their relative in care did not have enough to do during the day.

Availability of activities in care homes is a major determinant of quality of life and affects mortality rates, depression, physical function and behavioural symptoms.

Care staff perceive communication problems as one of the biggest challenges in providing good dementia care.

Communication problems make a person with dementia vulnerable to
exclusion and isolation and make it difficult for them to form relationships.

Pictures to Share books provide a well researched, readily available and enjoyable activity for those with dementia and their carers to share, whilst at the same time promoting high quality communication.

This site also provides a range of helpful information about how the arts can provide recreational activity and enjoyment for those with dementia or Alzheimer's Disease.
